i saw maradona playing, never saw pele..my opinion, ronaldo and messi are by far better players..but it's a fascination about history
not to mention the physique of athletes, they ate beef and pork then
my favorite team steaua bucuresti won champions league in 1986, i live in past but athletes from today are better faster, more technical, more intelligent

Im not a huge Messi fan, but are we comparing Messi's club goals with Barcelona against Pele's goals with...60's Santos? Not to mention Maradona in Serie A in the 80's when the italian championship was the best in the world and he had to score against the best defenses? I would not title someone "the best" based on pure numbers, it doesnt mean anything. Ten brazilian league titles vs two Serie A titles. Ten is bigger than two, no doubt...

I can believe someone dug this up to post [that :P
However, regarding Santos' titles, I must say that Brazilian championships back then meant more than today, while Italian titles in the 80s meant more than in the 60s (relative to Brazilian). What I mean is: club football was much more balanced around the world before the 80s and especially before the 90s, Bosman rule, exploding TV monopolies, etc.
You can see this in 2 ways:
- by looking at the proportion of European/South American victories in the Intercontinental Cup and how it evolved over time
- by looking at the composition of national teams: in 1958-1970, Brazilian NT players would play in Brazilian championship, then go to the World Cup, win, and amaze everyone. That was the benchmark level if you wanted to win the Brazilian league. In 1994-2002, Brazil would again win the World Cup, but now players from Brasileirao were the exception (and never the stars).
Bottom line: comparing players so far apart in time is misleading, but comparing leagues in the past with today's eyes is also misleading ;)

No I didn't, that is exactly what I referred to when I said "Bosman rule" (that is, the court ruling about the Bosman case that lead to the elimination of the "3 foreigners" rule).
Since then, no European counts as foreigner, and most South Americans get European IDs one way or another, so it is seldom restrictive nowadays.

I didn't base it on pure numbers, but they do mean something, club records not good enough, what about the international records? are they bias too? and what about the on and off pitch behaviour, if we are talking in "best footballer ever" terms.. does this matter? ...
3 world cup wins (first at 18 years old, scoring twice in the final),
vs
cheating in a semi-final at 26. ;-p
let;s just say that they were both great, a Messi will win in the end.. ;-p

back in the days there was ...passion,today we have marketing, and everything is made at industrial scale..for commercial purposes only...you can't compare 2 different things build with different tools made for different purposes...
Zidane > Maradona = Cruijff > Pelé
Ok, it's impossible to compare. 90s/2000s x 80s x 70s x 60s...
obs.: Pelé never won a Brazilian Serie A, he won 10 São Paulo State Championship. The first national championship was in 1971. Before we had the national Cup ("Taça Brasil") and other tournaments.

different times, different players.
i prefere Pele, as a symbol.
btw, talking about some other old times great(monumental) players. remember: Ferenc Puskas, Bobby Charlton, Eusebio...
