Probably because most of the team has stamina at level 5-7
and probably even with low stamina, after 60 minutes he is still better than the 2nd wing option you have
I don't think you have any experience with u21s and how it looks at this level...

Yep I don't like deep defence but you can't really argue with its effectiveness.
My feeling is that it's actually our defensive players who are the problem, which might be why putting them so deep isn't the best idea. I think they need more protection from the midfield.

The winger position was the key position. You'd think that the substitution will be there, not for a CB that did almost nothing in the game.

Im sure if he had a sub that made sense then he’d use him. Its not a club team where you can buy yourself a sub, you play with what you get.

U21 players have low stamina in general unless you train it up and lose weeks training other stuff in doing so. Have you ever managed the u21 side JE? If not maybe you should run for it? In my memory most teams have players with low stamina, and our country especially lacks decent squads, players and form really can handicap the manager.
The game engine usually makes defenders super human when approaching a player from the front and much less so tackling from behind...hence why usually a deep defence works well.
In that situation I think you have to change formation at half time. If you've only got 1 good winger and he can only play 45 minutes, relying on him as the key player for 90 is a struggle. He's either got to come off and we use the backup, or we go wingless.
Ah that brings me back to the point I made in the association.
If you don't play the winger on the striker line, you can instead bomb passes from deep without ever getting tackled. That might have been a better idea on reflection.

Yup, I’d start with 442/532 and then introduced the winger at half time with 4312/5212
It’s hard to make opinions without knowing the available players, forms.

Wait. I don't want to turn this into yet another spat.
I've said what I think about this game. Once again, I don't see it a disaster or a reason to leave the game all together (not my words). I saw a few things and I pointed them out. There's surely room for improvement but overall it was a good performance (see the game against Spain). It's only a game though, I don't think it's the end of the world or something when you lose. We all do. And deep down, we all want to achieve the biggest prize. And we all fail most of the time.
Now, if you excuse me, I will get my coat.

You mean a winger making long balls into penalty area from deep?
Yeah I don’t think it would work at u21 with low pm&passing. And if you get the ATT height incorrect then you’re pretty much screwed.

If you get the attack height wrong you're screwed anyway.
I'm not convinced wings are the best tactics for U21s unless you've got a star. I've always felt that position is specialist for high levels, in that it's useless otherwise. It's why I don't use them at my club, because I don't have a player who I feel can pull it off.

There is no such thing as good or bad for u21. All tactics can work, even more tactics work fine in comparison to senior football.
But it’s all limited to the available players and since apparently all strikers but 1 are bad/out of form how can you decide to play through centre?
Wings at u21 level work perfectly…

It's a matter of logic.
If 90% of your attacks come down the wing and you've a 60 sumskill winger, that's an effective strategy because you're hoping/expecting for a 20% success rate.
You're not going to get that same success rate with a 48 sumskill winger. It's not as effective at lower levels, which is exactly what the U21s are.
You can mitigate for lower pace and tech by not playing wingers on the striking line. That's what Piotr has been doing very effectively recently.

It doesn't work that way because the winger also plays against weaker opposition...
and again, if you don't have good striker with high pace&tech and you don't have high pm&pass in the middle, how do you expect to attack other than through winger?

btw. Freedman is a VERY good winger for u21 level so there's no problem there
