That's why I'm testing 2 wingers in an arcade game. I've always felt 2 wingers + 2 strikers is unworkable, which is exactly why I'm trying to make it work. This is a trial and error match and I have plenty of ways to adapt the above formation that I think might work better.

Do tactics make that much of a difference?

yes , massively but some tactics will work better against different sides so it can be timely to check who you are playing and playing to your opponents weaknesses, but it depends how obsessed you are and how much time you have ;)

I've done a lot of testing myself back in the day, 3 DEF tactics won't work against a winger, it's simply the way this engine is created - it's actually very simple... more checkers than chess

In a 3 def tactic a winger is always alone. If a winger is alone, he gets the ball all the time. When he gets the ball while alone, he gets forward & crosses.

A 2 wing + 2 strikers tactic can work very well in a 4-4-2 variant, especially with one low winger & one high winger or with wingers moving in opposed directions (when the ball goes on left side to low left winger the right one moves upwards and vice versa). Still it will mostly work against an opponent who plays through the centre without a winger.

At low/medium level (ratings 45-60) more things can work because there aren't as good wingers and strikers so you're not getting punished that much... but at top level (75+) there's really just a few ways of playing

523, 532, sometimes 622. 631... basically you have to use 5 defs (or more) otherwise you will be trashed

and at lower level I find it to also be the most reliable tactic, 5 defs in high line + winger is the most successful way of playing and at the same time the cheapest way

i created the 3 def tactic..... even for NT :) its very attacking and the idea is to outscore the opposition..... its the only way it can work but it fails against sides who play wingers :)

Yup, against a side that attacks through centre... never reliable and at best a lottery of who scores more. I tried it in Italy NT, it kind of worked, the results were ok, but it never felt "comfortable" even when working. Some crazy 18:15 in shots etc.

Against a side using a good winger it's a total mess. And the problem is that at higher level most teams use a winger + you never know whether the opponent will decide to play with or without a winger.

Who says the winger will be alone? ;) It's a hybrid formation based on movement, rotation and a pivot. There's definitely a risk against a counter-attack. Covering the width is always be the 3-man defence's biggest problem.

I'm just not a fan of 2-man midfields and I'm not sure why. I think it's that they can be difficult to rotate, or that there's no top to pass through so you just end up long-balling it to the strikers.

Yep, and this is the biggest reason why I don't play wingers. Wings in this game are such a specialist position, having a good winger isn't good enough and will just waste your prime way of attacking. There's absolutely no point playing wing-attack in this game unless your winger is rating 65+

I deeply dislike defending with 5 because of how limiting it is, and I'm not convinced that it's necessary. I had plenty of success (in the before-times) playing a pivoting 4-5-1 wing attack, either with a V or A midfield 3.

Who says the winger will be alone?

believe me he will be if the opponent uses a high-wide winger:) there's just no other way than using typical LB/RB in line all the time
even if on the tactic board it seems that the 7/9 of yours will get there - they won't because they won't have enough time to move back...
don't know what winger nothis has, but a decent one would be uncatchable, probably also taking one of CBs out of position because the CB will be closest to him

the whole engine is 90% about long balling to winger and strikers, that's the whole problem and the main point why more than 2 CMs are pointless at higher level (sometimes 3 are useful but only in limited scenarios) and there's no working concept of a "10" or advanced playmaker (again, at higher level, at level 40-55, u21 NT etc. it works)

yes and no... it's no more of a specialist position than a striker and it's by far the most dangerous player on the pitch when well positioned...
I prefer to have 2 weak CMs and a good winger than having 3 decent CMs

my wing has 11 pace, 14 tech, 14 pm, 14 passing - he's tearing through teams playing for 65
defender at this level can be ignored

5 defs to block the opponent, 2 CMs to pass the ball to winger, winger to pass to strikers.... voila, nothing easier and better working than that...

what level were you playing at? I'm talking top NT level and top Poland level, so rating level 75-80+

I loved when my opponent "tried" a 4 at the back. absolutely lovely. unfortunately it happened very rarely:)

To be fair though....my opponent was created on the 15th March and came back on the same date ..... no activity since?? So i knew to give my 17,18,19,20 and 21 yr old a chance...
I pay for my plus... have done for 10 yrs ... when can we expect admin to at least do their job and look into this? to see if it is corruption? maybe stop it? it is ruining this game.... listen to the honest players/payers and show support....
If people are coming on and dont understand what to do then can we address this? or can we at least boot cheaters?

I can't remember the ratings but I was a 4-time NT manager at top 16 and top 30 nations.
