3 points for a win seems fair. How about 3 points beating a higher rank, 2 points within 2 rating points and 1 for the opposite?
2024-03-25 22:38:18
I think the points for goals are a bit unfair. Especially at the start of the season when some teams priritise the cup and play a weaker side in the league, making the goal difference unfair compared to other teams that play the same team further down in the season.
Or, 2 points for every rating point difference. Which is my favourite option, btw.

I did some work on it and if you want to give the lion's share to wdp, you'd have give goals 0.5p and the same for the rating difference. Beer would still get the most (4.95) but Thamesmead and Rock would also get points, 0.9 and 1.6 for their big wins. While Legia and Man untd would get less (after all they lost badly) 1.4 and 2.1.

Same in my league, kendal would get 5.05 and mages 5.1.

RTS would only get 7.25p.

Initially there were no extra points for winning the game, I changed that because it left too many teams on minus points.
Whatever the formula, it has to reflect

A - B

Where A is points for size of victory and B is difference in ratings.

I'm either going to remove minus points to just 0, or I might have a mirror system where the winner gets 5 (for example) and the team they beat gets minus 5.
Just trying to get the formula fair to start with.

Reading that again

Should Legia and Man Utd get more points than Thamesmead when they lost and he won by 6?

Using Thamesmead VS Man U as an example

Thamesmead has a 10.2 rating advantage and wins by 6 goals.

So balancing those 2 facts, who is that a better result for? Should Thamesmead have won by more? What's a fair result considering the ratings gap?

As a starting point, I've said 1 rating point equals 1 goal. So Thamesmead should have won by 10. That might be too harsh.

I've updated the formula and I'm pretty happy with it. If you're in a minus number the chances are that you underperformed in the first game.

That's better :)

My suggestion was: one rating to be half a point, one goal difference also half a point. So, the regular points for a win or a draw aren't affected as much.

This way RTS would get 3points + 4.25 bonus

lol beating Man Utd by 10 goals would be bloody difficult! Even with 10 ratings difference, that was only achieved by the young players he brought on in the 2nd half.

This is where you'd need a more complex formula, one that disregards the rating produced at the end of the match, but one which creates an average. So if you were say 70 rated for 81 minutes, then brought on younger players at end lowering your rating to 60, you'd be rated as being 69 not 60.

I couldn't tighten it up any more without completely unbalancing the rest of the table. With the current formula, 8-0 would have seen you break even. I think that's about right with a 10 point skill gap.

I've put a 10 point limit on the ratings gap and reduced goal value to .8. I'm open to making more changes but they have to be easy to make and not arbitrary.

I'll test it and see how it works across the board

So my feeling is that by reducing the skill gap and the goal value, you give too much emphasis to just winning the game. At that point it just becomes a league table.
The purpose of this game is to try reward getting results despite a ratings advantage/disadvantage, so it has to be weighted towards to the size of the result, not the result itself. It's difficult to put an exact ratio on what that weight should be because there's potential for big variation, hence the max 10 point rating I bought in.

I still think taking out the minus numbers might be the best way of doing this.

I'll ask again because it got lost.

What would be a fair result of Thamesmead VS Man U?

The formula I have now says 8-0 because of the rating gap, which is why the 6-0 got minus points.

I think this is about as good as it's going to get without becoming very complicated. With only 2 data sets it's difficult to manipulate very much.
I added an extra point for a draw. Tried adding 1 point for a loss but it just further unbalanced the table in favour of the teams at a ratings disadvantage.

I think it should all be around the points awarded in normal league. 3 for win, 1 for draw. Then you'd add/deduct bonuses according to difference in rating and goals. Let's say 0.25 points.

Thames would get 3 points for the win. Then 1.5p for the goal difference. Other 2.55p deducted because of the rating difference. Total: 1.95 points.
Man Utd: 0 + 2.55 - 1.5 = 1.05p

RTS (18-0 win vs Oxford, 53.4 vs 43.9 ratings) = 3p(win) + 4.5p(goal diff) - 2.375 (rating diff) = 5.125 points.
Oxford 0 - 4.5 +2.375 = -2.125

It's only fair that teams that win get something. But not as much as the normal point system awards them.
