So I have a question (that I'll be posting in the other thread).

It seems like the major problem we have with the national team right now is the defence. If we don't have the players for that position, how do you plan to manage this?

A lot depends on looking at what skills a defender should have.
Obviously - the best possible!
But what minimum?

I very often played from the position of a weaker team with lower economic resources, so I couldn't afford top defenders like 2x18 + 3x14/15 and I don't expect such richness :)

I have a lot of tactics - with which I have achieved very good results and beaten stronger rivals - that do very well when defenders without very high side skills are designated to play.
The minimum levels for me are 17 defence, 16 speed, the others can be 8-11.
Of course, I'm assuming there are some better defenders as well - but playing with the kind of defenders I've described above doesn't scare me.

What we wanted to avoid happened :(

Just for your information, club tactics don't always work in international matches.

Why wouldn’t they? It’s the same engine.

Sometimes, in the club, we have players suited to our style because we trained them ourselves. But in the national team, we have players trained by others.

Of course, I'm not saying this is the case 100% of the time.
2024-06-16 11:18:29
Of course, leading the best teams like Poland, this isn't a problem. But in England, we might have this issue because we don't have players like we do in the club.

Engine works differently on different level of skill of players but is same engine..

I think this actually leads pretty well into a point I wanted to make. There are 2 types of successful managers in this game

1. Those that are successful because they're excellent trainers and traders
2. Those who are excellent tacticians.

The first type are miserable failures as national managers. I think any nation has to be able to distinguish why any manager is successful at their club before electing them.

Sometimes the best managers have not been that successful with their club sides.

Qstar was a WC winner, but club record wasn't great, don't think he even made the prem.

Tacticians probably favoured more than ever though with NTS with scouting and knowing player skills has been made significantly easier than it used to be.

U21 NT is a different subject, at that level it’s sometimes better not to play at the top because you’re using low level players in u21.

In u21 different tactics work and there’s a bigger number or working tactics.

Senior NT not so much, similar tactics as at club level, only a couple formations that make sense.

Luckily, my experience with national teams is quite mixed.

I led the biggest one - Poland, from a position of strength.
But also medium-sized Scotland
And small Slovenia and Canada.

The engine of the match is the same - what remains is the selection of players and tactics.

I think I know how it works ;)

What season did you manage Scotland? We played together?

No, The England team was then led by Lorre.
