Tactical change and three substitutes with position changes

I only watched the match today, so I will only now write a summary.

What can I say - a huge disappointment. I didn't expect an easy match and that's why I took the time to prepare on Thursday and Friday.... and perhaps I just over-prepared.

I wanted to win at low cost and risk, to save as many core squad players as possible. A lot of replacements played, on top of that we were affected by injuries and poor forms in midfield. There wasn't much to choose from.
Despite this - without taking away from the good work of the opponents' coach - we had this match in hand - the tactical changes worked well.... and we should have taken it calmly to the end... but it happened otherwise, a lot of bad luck - perhaps the mythical ‘handi’ after the red card.... - but in the end it was my decisions that resulted in playing with a weaker line-up than we could.... so there is nothing to blame on the engine, bad luck or conspiracy - I should have won and this time I failed. I have lessons to learn.

We have a crucial two-match series of these qualifiers against Norway ahead of us - let's hope the form rises!

I'd completely forgotten about the NT, I'm decorating so haven't been on the PC for more than 2 minutes.

Yep, that result is a disaster. Thankfully we're in a position where results against Norway can largely undo the damage.

Unfortunately that result puts bigger pressure on both Norway matches.

A good and very important result. I haven't watched the game (my pc is disconnected while I'm installing new floors) so I can't analyse anything, but we're back on track.

Saturday is usually the day I spend most of my time with my family. But I'm going on the assumption that it's better to have time on Thursday and Friday and spend it preparing for a match than talking on Saturday after a match I haven't prepared for;)

And about the match itself - obviously a great result for us, although the quick red card for Norway makes it hard to judge if the tactics were good and if it would have been so good without it too...but you have to take with gratification if sokker gives something :)

Great game played by Foden after his return from injury - I look forward to his further development - he should be a strong point of this team for the next 4 seasons. We still have a bit of a problem in midfield - 3 of my 4 preferred midfielders didn't play due to injury and forms - but the replacements did well this time!

At the halfway point of the qualifiers it looks good. We are second in the group and closer to 1st than 3rd place. The plan remains the same - promotion to the World Cup - and it is well within reach. And given the situation in the group, I would like to put France under pressure and fight for first place.

Today it was a poor match from our side. Especially the first tactic was very poor and Norway dominated. After the change of tactics it evened out and we even had more opportunities and managed to draw, and there was even an opportunity for 3-2 which would have been very unfair though. We got a happy draw but it is the form of the forwards that is worrying, this was clearly lacking today (apart from the more accurate tactics).

Overall, I'm quite pleased, as the last two matches, ending in draws, against unfortunately a stronger-than-us Vietnam and an important one for promotion against Norway, coincided with my holiday, a trip in Morocco with partly limited possibilities to arrange tactics and little time for selection. I had pre-prepared tactics..but it was not the same.
I will be back soon and hopefully we will remain undefeated this season!

Millers form has dropped a lot unfortunately and it’s hurting my team too. :(

Point against France or New Zealand and job is done.

Job done.
You really have had some bloody luck this season but on this occasion it was deserved. We were the better team and you were being let down by the defence.

Well, first about the last match.

A 1-1 draw with France and two key issues.
We remained still undefeated this season, with both games against the French ending in draws.
With this one point, we are virtually certain of advancing to the World Cup finals. (I don't foresee a twelve-goal defeat against New Zealand).

Before the game:
We had major squad problems, as our top strikers were unable to play due to injury or low form.... as well as substitutes for the top ones - we had to take what was available... and there were some skill shortages here.
However, I didn't want to leave the matter of promotion for the last round, as I treat the duel with France very prestigious - for one thing, it's France, and two, led by Antoś :)
This time I prepared from the zero, a completely new tactic. There was some risk, because I didn't have time to test it, but I assumed that it would work well and allow me to compensate for the lack of skills of the strikers I wrote about.

And it worked. The match was a good spectacle. The score of 1-1 does not accurately reflect the course of the game, as both sides created several great opportunities each and probably 2-2 or 3-3 would have reflected the course of the game better. I think the result is fair but also, in the group situation, satisfactory.

Of course, the promotion concern would not have been there had it not been for the slip-up against Guatemala or New Zealand's fortunate goal for 3-2 in the 89th minute of the match against Norway. But thanks to this turn of events, the question of promotion had to be fought out on the pitch until the end.

Next week, after the last group match, I will write a bigger summary of these qualifiers with reference to the individual matches and maybe a little bit about the current squad situation.

I keep getting the feeling that I should write more... but it's hard to write about specific things - like player skills, tactical preparations, match selection or tactics themselves.... it would be too risky and possibly I can only afford to do so in the closed forum of the national team.

The unbeaten streak continues.
Today I hope to have given you some satisfaction by beating the Scots 4:3 in a pretty interesting match.

How good to see Murphy back!
