Personally, I wouldn't buy him because on paper he doesn't look good enough to both get into the U21 and also return a good enough profit when I'd decide to sell him (most likely 22-23yos).

But don't forget I'm concentrating on developing youngsters at this stage of my SK life. That is why I wouldn't buy him. However, if you planned to keep him for longer term, then I'd train him striker, pace and tech and hope to get him to a decent level where he'd help me win games. I can't see him getting into the national sides but I guess you'd only truly discover his talent once you start training him.

I don't imagine he wouldn't fetch a huge transfer fee/price, so regardless, you wouldn't have much to lose by buying him! :)

None of that is why I'm asking. I'm just interested in what people would do with him. We're now on the 2nd page and still no-one has actually played the game.

In my team I have a 18yo who looks like this:
poor [3] stamina tragic [0] keeper
good [7] pace average [5] defender
solid [8] technique solid [8] playmaker
unsatisfactory [2] passing poor [3] striker

And people suggest me to train him like a def.
I wanted to pops good pace to 11 and then move training to pass but last time I’m thinking to move him from mid to def.

OK, here is my attempt...

Tony Heskey
club: Jotun ISK, country: England
value : 247 550 £
wage: 4,630 £
very good [9] form
tragic [0] tactical discipline
height: 178 cm, weight: 73.1 kg, BMI: 23.07

tragic [0] stamina hopeless [1] keeper
outstanding [12) pace adequate [6] defender
excellent [10] technique solid [8] playmaker
average [5] passing outstanding [12] striker

Just awarded the 14 points!

Hurrah! He's a fairly decent striker

I'm not sure what he is.

I think the choice once his pace is sorted, is to either give him passing and turn him into a winger or defending and turn him into a defender. The latter is probably the better option.
He's not a central mid because his combined Passing/Defending is too low.

He's probably more valuable as a striker but a better player for the team as a defender.

I'd be inclined to train as LO has, but train pace first and see what general training pops happen along the way as can be shifted if needs be.

No general pops in this game, only 14 points to assign ;)

Still training pace for him, this week should be pop, I thought to make mid for him because he looks not to bad as 18yo.

After work I join to the game :)

I think the issue is always "This player only has so many pops in him, so where do I place them to make him most useful".

Take Pace and Technique out of the equation because all outfield players need those, and you're left with this.

unsatisfactory [2] passing
average [5] defender
solid [8] playmaker
poor [3] striker

To be a defender he needs Defending
To be a midfielder he needs Defending and Passing
To be a winger he needs Passing
To be a striker he needs Striking

Turning him into a midfielder is the most difficult of those 4, because it requires the training of 2 skills instead of 1 for the others.
Looking at those other 3 options, Striking is obviously the weakest. So then you're left with defence or wing. He has decent playmaking, but his passing is horrible. So for me it's a case of "Is it easier to train Passing 2 or Defending 5" and the answer to that seems obvious to me.

Not that simple.

Winger needs high pace, tech, pm, passing.

Def needs high pace, def; tech and pm can be much lower.

A 2-skill player is an option only for a GK and for a DEF.

Mid, wing or att with 2 skills will be pointless. You can’t have a mid without playmaker, or a striker without technique etc.

I agree with everything you just said apart from Tech for defenders. Low tech defenders are a liability.

Well as always it depends on what level of a player we are talking about

Let's say that we have 60 points to distribute

14 pace 16 defender
11 tech 11 playmaker
8 passing

that's a decent defender, not for top level, but he is useful at higher level as starter or sub

Now if we distribute it for a winger

14 pace 8 defender
16 tech 11 playmaker
11 passing

for me the defender can play on higher level than this winger

striker is a bit tricky - yes, he needs less skills [only 3], but:
a. pace & striker are slowest trainings / passing & playmaker are fastest [except stamina]

b. you get a lot of training from general training ever week [7 general = 1 advanced] and defs / mids get GT in more "position skills" - assuming pace training, a def/mid will receive GT in defence, tech, passing & playmaker, while ATT will receive only technique & striker GT [from positional] - so you can't really just distribute 50 skills into defs/mids def, tech, pm & pass and 50 skills in atts tech&striker because they won't get the same amount from GT

assuming no injuries every player gets 13 GTs in every skill each season, in 5 seasons that's 65GTs so ~9 advanced trainings per skill. So defs/mids will get +9 extra advanced trainings in 4 position skills = 36 extra trainings for def/tech/pm/pass, while atts will receive only half of that, 18 extra trainings
