The American Under-21's traveled to Israel and came away with a solid 1-0 victory. Tucker Bottoms came off the bench to score the winner in the 75th minute, while Leo Shelton kept a clean sheet in his third appearance for the national side.
The United States controlled much of the play but failed to make the possession count for the most part. Milt Watson in particular squandered several quality scoring chances.
"The kid knows he didn't play well," commented the manager, "but he's got a good head on his shoulders and a lot of talent and knows we're counting on him to score goals this season."
In contrast Tucker Bottoms came of the bench late and immediately set about testing the Israeli keeper. Two point blank headers demanded ten-bell saves, but there was no answer for the curling 35-yarder that won the game.
In the 75th minute the rampant Devin Yarborough ran with the ball down the right, cut into the penalty area and cut the ball back across the face of goal. The ball evaded the strikers but was cleared straight to Conrad Maurin who quickly fed the ball back into the feet of Bottoms. From well outside the area the young striker feathered a lovely curling ball into the far side of the net.
"I looked up and saw the keeper a little out of position there and let it fly" said Bottoms with a grin, "just lucky that it went where I was aiming."
When asked if Bottoms would start in the next game the manager had this to say, "He's an amazing talent, but we have concerns with his conditioning. We're in communication with the training staff at his club, but at this time we don't know if he's ready for big minutes."
