Jonboy? Seriously? Did the programmers OD on The Waltons or something?

I think a lot of these names come from some surreal parallel universe where everything seems familiar but slightly wrong somehow.

Match Ratings for Friday's friendly vs Latvia

10 points scale, 6 is average.

GK Shelton: 4.5; poor with his distribution and was out of position for 2 long goals against. Had one nice save but failed to come through when asked on Latvia's equalizer.

D Burke: 6.0; played a decent game, did what he had to.

D Avery: 9.0; was a rock throughout, won nearly all his battles and was tidy with his clearances.

D Whitney: 7.0; played a strong and dynamic game, swept up the mess on nearly every occasion; excellent distribution.

D Worthen: 3.5; had little to do, but came up short when called upon, poor play on Latvia's final goal.

D Barton: 5.5; had perhaps the worst 80min of his international career, before coming on strong at the end. Dwelt on the ball far too often and gave away needless chances.

M Shelley: 7.0; a strong presence in the middle, won more than his share of 50/50 balls and played several quality passes when in possession. His run and cross in the 57th minute was world-class and should have led to a goal. Quality performance in his first start for the nats.

M Winslow: 9.0; the kind of performance that proves the hype is justified. Won every ball he got within 5 yards of, and provided quality service to the strikers throughout.

M Yarbrough: 7.5; proved the doubters wrong who said he couldn't play in the middle, a wizard running with the ball and even threw himself into a couple challenges, with mixed results.

F Watson: 6.5; Had several amazing moments, terrorized the defense if not the goalkeeper. Poor finishing throughout and inexplicably refused to shoot on several breakaways. The quietest brace in recent memory. Was invisible for the final half hour.

F Bottoms: 3.5; wasteful with every chance created for him outside of tap-in created by Yarbrough. Seemed a step slow and disinterested at times.

Subs:

D McCloud: 5.0; looked out of his depth with the ball at his feet.

M Maurin: 5.0; overrun at times by his opposite number.

F Hartman: 7.0; nicked the ball from his man and steamed in on goal a couple times, forced one quality save from the keeper.

Match ratings for Friday's friendly vs Denmark

(10 point scale, 6 is average)

G Shelton 7.5: One great save early was his only real test. His quickness off the line snuffed out a few threats.

D Worthen 6.5: Soured an otherwise outstanding performance with some panicked clearances late, likely due to fatigue. Still a solid outing in his first appearance on the flank.

D Whitney 5.5: Not his greatest effort, not around the ball much and nearly gifted Denmark an equalizer in the 85th.

D Avery 9.0: Second commanding performance from the emerging star. Dominated his matchup from the beginning and saved the game with a great tackle after the Whitney turnover with the game on the line. Needs to stop getting caught in possession.

D Burke 5.0: Looked to be on his way to a solid performance before earning a rather harsh straight red in the 16th minute.

D Barton 7.0: A quiet, solid game. Not much to do with Denmark rarely attacking on his side.

M Shelley 9.0: Heroic performance as the only holding mid after Burke's sending off. Won every battle. His tackle followed by a killer through ball in the 26th proved to be the match-winning moment. Tired after the hour mark and needed to be subbed late.

M Winslow 7.0: A workmanlike effort after being called in for emergency duty in the defense, but his on-the-ball talents are on best display in the midfield. His yellow will see him miss the next game due to suspension.

M Yarbrough 6.0: Had his moments and could be asking questions of Bottoms after putting him in alone with the keeper in the 42nd, but was often caught in possession and looked out of sorts.

F Watson 9.0: Didn't receive the same quantity or quality of service as last week, but was strong on the ball and nearly created a goal out of nothing, hitting the post from a severe angle in the 62nd. His 90th minute goal was well taken and deserved.

F Bottoms 7.5: Not much service and had to try and manufacture chances on his own at times, but did well in that effort and capped his performance with the game winner.

Subs:

M Maurin 7.5: Fantastic cameo from the 20yr old. Picked up right where the tiring Shelley left off, winning balls and providing dangerous service. His late header created the Watson goal.

F Hartman 6.5: Not enough opportunity to really impress. But nearly had the goal of the season with his steal and subsequent 40 yard rocket that grazed the top of the bar in the 85th minute.
