Could be worse, we could have Fabio Capello as a manager. I guess being an England fan would feel much more frustrating right now.
Argentina ARE playing messi as a CAM, right behind Tevez and Higuain, but he is mostly free to roam where ever he wants. While I'm not comparing Donovan to Messi, I'm suggesting that he's played in the same way. (Sokker won't let me line the guys up and keep pushing everything to the left)
Altidore - Dempsey
Donovan
Feilhaber - Bradley - Edu
Spector - Bocanegra - Demerit - Cherundolo
Howard
Also, I never said that Michael Bradley sucked, I think his father sucks as a manager. Michael is really the one on the U.S. who has a set of balls in terms of having an attitude on the field. I think he watched a lot of Patrick Vieira growning up.
And, Onyewu has only had one good game and that was against Spain last summer, everwhere else he has been horrible. Milan picked him up solely for that one performance to discover that he was useless. He played in a few friendly matches last summer for them in that tournament in the U.S. with Inter, Chelsea and America; he was horrible. Even before his injury they realized that they couldn't risk playing him because he's a liability, something that New Castle and Standard Leige already new. He was at Milan for 9 League/CL games and didn't see a minute on the field before his injury.
Like you said, EVERYONE new this guy was horrible. EXCEPT for Bob Bradley. Not playing for 7 months and coming back from injury even makes him worse. I think the pre-cup match against the Czechs proved that and still Bradley keeps playing him.

The only thing with that is I think Donovan would get lost. I don't think he is a smart enough player to find open spaces and would never go back on defense if he was a roamer, and our defense is not organized enough.
I wouldn't mind seeing Spector come in for Onyewu for the Algeria game since Algeria is so small. However, I would put Spector on the right because he is able to serve good balls in and contribute to the attack, and Cherundolo is better with his left foot. All things considered the line up would be what I would most likely play against Algeria, only I would make Donovan the right mid.
Onyewu plays big against teams with strong forwards. He is able to muscle up and throw them off their game when healthy, and he is unbelievable in the air. He isn't a very good distributor of the ball, and that is why he never played for Milan. The first few games he made some big mistakes in the friendlies but that is getting used to a new system. The US plays a very simple system. I think given playing time and more involvement in the system he will be able to contribute to Milan.

Mexico played a great game and France has lost anelka
ESPN is showing this lineup for today: Howard - DeMerit - Bornstein - Bocanegra - Cherundolo - Bradley - Edu - Donovan - Dempsey - Gomez - Altidore. I would have gone with Spector over Bornstein, but Onyewu is finally on the bench so I can't complain.

Awesome! My favourite team goes through. Superb match, deserved place in 1/8 final.
I was so happy, when Donovan scored that goal. Can`t remember when I was that happy when watching sports...especially soccer.
USA! USA! USA!

You think he needs to be on the wing more than in the midfield now? Ha haaa! :-)
he was on the wing. everything he created started from him being on the wing(even though towards the end of the game he was more a roaver). He disappeared when he went into the middle than started going back out wide and got back into the game. Donovan received the ball wide and than passed and went into the middle to attack the net, so your point is mute.

????? he received the ball in the middle of the field between the center and the end line....ran down the field and got the ball to Jozy right before he got to the penalty area...what were you watching?
This is exactly how I said he should be used............

he's not exactly on the wing, but he is playing much wider than a CM would be..
I was watching the one where he released down the right side. He found the open space and ran into it. Either way I am happy for the US. But Feilhaber went wide for a period and Donovan disappeared because he came into the middle and never got to attack the defense. As soon as Donovan went back outside and Feilhaber went into the middle Donovan created chances again. Just because he received the ball i little more inside does not mean he wasn't playing as a right mid.
And I am not sure how you say that isn't on the wing. He is 10 yards away from the sideline when he receives it.
