Onderwerp: Who is the best English central midfielder?

so who do you think is the best english central midfielder? please post your reasons for choosing that particular player, and sorry if missed out on any players, i picked my choices from recent callups in the english national team.

for me it's paul scholes, despite his age, lack of pace, and total inability to time a good tackle (a good tackle from scholes is as rare as a misplaced pass from him!), i think he still has some of the best vision, range of passing, and ball keeping ability around, not to mention his trademark screamers!

i think gerrard and lampard are good, but honestly, main thing what playmakers should do is passing the ball to strikers! these 2 players usually chose to shot.. thats why I prefer players as Xavi, Iniesta... and is reason why rooney didnt score on world cup and englad did not qualify to quaterfinal

so how did germany beat england then?

on topic: how can you compare holding midfielders with wide midfielders and attacking midfielders? some of the players you listed have so little in common regarding their abilities and usual duties that you could as well compare heskey with a.cole

well in regards to central midfield duties, not all players are the same anyways, and i know milner can also play out wide, but he's been effective in the centre last season. the same argument can be made for gerrard playing on the left in the world cup. but i'm not asking for a quantitative choice here, just pick who you think is best and why :)

PS seems like lots of people have picked gerrard, which is not surprising given his performance in the world cup, but i would prefer people to consider a more overall approach when choosing. and let's not turn this into a germany v england thread please, there already is one in the world cup forum :P

There are different types of midfielder.

Lampard and Gerrard are luxury attacking mids which is why they fail in the same team and we got overun by Germany.

Scott Parker has the grit determination and drive to have been fantastic for us this WC but he did not get a minute of football before he was cut from the squad.....it made no sense. He had the pace that Barry was sorely missing....especially after that famous sprinter Oezil walked past him to set up the 4th goal.

and meanwhile hargreaves just returned from a nightmare 18 months out with a knee injury

i reckon gerrard is more of a box to box than attacking mid, especially when compared to lampard, it's just that he's usually played in a more attacking role

there also hasn't been a passer in the team since scholes retired.

I can´t pick...I think they all look quite equal. My fave is Beckham:)

he doesn't really play central mid though....

and it would be nice to be informed if my thread was moved to a different forum

Why was everyone complaing about Pual Scholes wanted out of Retirement I don't know, apart from his (lack of) tackling skill, he is a quality player.

He knows how to use his hands, too ;)
